Catalyxx Invests €120 Million in Renewable Chemicals Facility at ZILS

Catalyxx has announced the development of its first commercial scale renewable chemicals production facility at ZILS – Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone, in an investment of approximately €120 million that further strengthens the region’s attractiveness for innovative and sustainable industries.

Named Catalyxx Iberia, the future plant will produce butanol, hexanol and octanol from bioethanol, offering the market low carbon alternatives to conventional petrochemical products.

Recognised by the Portuguese Government as a Project of National Interest (PIN), the initiative stands out for its contribution to industrial development, innovation, sustainability and the competitiveness of the national economy. Having already secured its main environmental approvals, the project is in the final stages of development, with construction expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The choice of ZILS was driven by a combination of competitive advantages, including its industrial infrastructure, proximity to the Port of Sines, strong logistics connectivity and access to renewable energy. These factors further reinforce Sines’ position as a leading location for next generation industries and for the development of value chains linked to the energy transition and industrial decarbonisation. The facility is expected to prevent approximately 105,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, while contributing to the creation of new sustainable value chains and attracting further investment to Portugal.

The development is supported by a combination of private and public funding, including €20 million awarded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), underlining its strategic relevance to European objectives for industrial decarbonisation and supply chain security.

The implementation of this project provides another example of the ability of Sines, and ZILS in particular, to attract high value added industries aligned with the principles of innovation, sustainability and international competitiveness.
