Start Campus inaugurates the first building of SINES DC, the future largest data center campus in Europe
Start Campus officially inaugurated today the first building of the SINES DC project, located in ZILS – Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone, an area managed by aicep Global Parques. The project is one of the largest investments made in Portugal and one of the most sustainable data center campuses in Europe, with a total planned capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW), powered 100% by renewable energy and with the particularity of a cooling system using seawater.
The ceremony, held today at the campus facilities, was attended by members of the Portuguese Government and the Embassy of the United States of America. On behalf of aicep Global Parques, Manuel Gaeiras, Executive Director and Miguel Borralho, Director of ZILS were present. This project reinforces Portugal’s position as a global digital hub, benefiting from a privileged geostrategic location, with direct connection to intercontinental submarine cables, access to green energy sources, and high resilience and energy security. It is important to highlight that Start Campus is part of the Sines Tech community, which has been consolidating Portugal – and, in particular, the Sines region – as an excellent destination for the submarine cables and the installation of data centers of different scales, contributing decisively to the global digital transition.
