Proven resilience of the Start Campus megadata centre at ZILS

According to the news published by ECO / Mariana Bandeira on 28 April 2025, the SINES DC project, the mega data centre under construction by Start Campus, located in ZILS – Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone, demonstrated remarkable resilience during the blackout that affected the Iberian Peninsula. This performance highlights the robustness of the energy system in place and reinforces confidence in the technological solutions adopted.

As stated by Robert Dunn, CEO of Start Campus, “It was interesting to see how the system responded in real-world conditions, as well as the performance of the team and supply chain. It worked as expected.”

During the incident, uninterrupted power supply was ensured through a combination of UPS batteries and green diesel (HVO) generators, a real test of reliability for the infrastructure provided by Schneider Electric, a key technology partner. This successful response may prove decisive for renewing the agreement between the two companies, as construction of the second building approaches – part of a six-building campus due for completion by 2030.

Strategically located within ZILS, the infrastructure aims to become Europe’s largest and most sustainable data centre, powered by renewable energy and cooled with seawater using an innovative and environmentally responsible system.

With its prime location, access to green energy, direct links to submarine telecom cables and a strong commitment to sustainability, ZILS continues to position itself as a destination of excellence for the new generation of data centres and digital industries.
